The Soldier's Sweetheart - Jimmie Rodgers (1927)
From Jimmie Rodgers Wiki
"The Soldier's Sweetheart" was written by Jimmie Rodgers and was released on October 7, 1927 by RCA Victor and Bluebird[1], as Side A of Bluebird catalog #33-0513. On the Victor #20864, this song was Side B while the song “Sleep, Baby, Sleep” was side A[2]. The songs were recorded on August 4, 1927 in Bristol, Tennessee. The first recording was his own composition, “The Soldier’s Sweetheart”; the second was the old yodel song, “Sleep, Baby, Sleep”.
The narrator of the song is the soldier’s wife. She laments the loss of her husband during the war and the sad thing about it is the way she found out. Surprisingly, Jimmie Rodgers' first recording includes no yodeling!
